How much is Old Age Security in 2026?

For October to December 2026, the maximum Old Age Security pension is $762.50 a month for people aged 65 to 74 and $838.75 a month for people 75 and over, according to Service Canada. The higher amount for those 75 and older reflects a permanent 10% increase that began in July 2022.

OAS pensionAge 65 to 74$762.50
OAS pensionAge 75 and over$838.75
GISSingle, widowed or divorced$1,138.90
GISSpouse receives full OAS$685.56

Amounts are reviewed every January, April, July and October against the Consumer Price Index. For October to December 2026 they rose 1.4%, or 3.0% over the previous year. They never go down when prices fall.

A full pension needs 40 years of residence in Canada after age 18. With 10 to 39 years you receive a partial pension, worked out as 1/40 of the full amount for each year.

Old Age Security dates versus when you qualify

You can receive OAS from the month after you turn 65 if you are a Canadian citizen or legal resident and have lived in Canada for at least 10 years since age 18. Many people are enrolled automatically and receive a letter the month after they turn 64; others must apply.

You can also delay OAS for up to five years. Each month of delay raises the pension by 0.6%, up to 36% more at age 70. Delaying can make sense if you are still working and would lose much of the pension to the recovery tax anyway.

How the OAS recovery tax (clawback) works

If your net world income is above a yearly threshold, you repay 15% of the amount above it, taken off your monthly OAS. For 2025 income the threshold is $93,454, which sets the recovery tax on payments from July 2026 to June 2027. The threshold for 2026 income is $95,323.

  1. Take your net income from line 23600 of your return, before the recovery tax.
  2. Subtract the threshold for that year.
  3. Multiply the difference by 15% to get the yearly repayment.
  4. Divide by 12 to see how much comes off each monthly payment.

Example: with 2025 net income of $103,454, you are $10,000 over the threshold. The repayment is $1,500 a year, or $125 off each monthly payment from July 2026. The full pension disappears at about $152,062 of income for people aged 65 to 74.

What to do if your OAS payment is late

Wait five to 10 business days after the payment date before contacting Service Canada, as deposits can take a few days to arrive and cheques take longer. Then check My Service Canada Account to see whether the payment was issued and confirm your banking details and address are up to date.

GIS and Allowance payments are recalculated each July from the previous year's return. If you did not file, the payment can stop, so filing by the tax filing deadline protects your July amount.

Budgeting on a fixed retirement income

OAS, GIS and CPP arrive together near the end of the month, so the first week of the next month is when bills cluster. Setting aside rent, utilities and insurance on payment day keeps the rest free for groceries and everyday spending.

OAS is taxable, while GIS and the Allowance are not. If you also run a small side business in retirement, keep sales tax apart from benefit income with a GST/HST expense tracker.

EMOH Pay's daily money digest summarizes what came in and what went out, which makes it easier to see whether a monthly pension is stretching far enough. FAQ

OAS Payment Dates 2026: frequently asked questions

Is OAS paid on the same day as CPP?

Yes. OAS, GIS, the Allowance and CPP are all paid on the same date each month. In 2026 that date falls in the last week of the month, except December, which is paid on the 22nd.

Does OAS go up in October 2026?

Yes. OAS rose 1.4% for October to December 2026. The maximum is now $762.50 a month from age 65 to 74 and $838.75 from age 75.

Is OAS taxable income?

The OAS pension is taxable and reported on a T4A(OAS) slip. GIS, the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor are not taxable, though you still report them on your return.

Can I get OAS if I live outside Canada?

Yes, if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. Otherwise, OAS is paid abroad only for the months you are in Canada. GIS is not paid outside Canada for more than six months.

When will I get my first OAS payment?

Your first payment is on the regular payment date in the month after your OAS starts. If you were enrolled automatically, the letter tells you when; otherwise apply up to 11 months before you want it to begin.
