Quick answer

How do I plan a household budget in Pakistan?

To plan a household budget in Pakistan, start from your monthly take-home pay, list fixed costs such as rent, school fees and utility bills, then aim for about 50% on needs, 30% on wants and 20% on savings or a committee. Track every expense for a month, including cash, and adjust the categories that run over.

How to use this monthly budget planner for Pakistan

This monthly budget planner for Pakistan has two inputs. Monthly take-home income is what reaches your account or hand after income tax is withheld. Rent is what you pay your landlord each month. If you own your home, enter zero and treat maintenance as a need.

The planner uses the 50/30/20 rule. Half of your income covers needs, including rent. Thirty percent covers wants. Twenty percent goes to savings, and the planner counts a committee, the rotating savings group many families join, as savings. Read our 50/30/20 rule guide for the reasoning behind the split.

What goes into a ghar ka budget?

A ghar ka budget, or household budget, in Pakistan covers rent, groceries, electricity, gas, water, school fees, transport, domestic help and family obligations. Electricity bills swing sharply between winter and summer, so a good budget plans for the highest months, not the average.

Sample monthly budget in Pakistan on Rs 120,000

Here is how Rs 120,000 of monthly take-home income could be divided for a small family renting in a large city. It is an example, not an official figure. Rents and bills differ a lot between Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and smaller cities, so replace each line with your own numbers.

Illustrative monthly household budget on Rs 120,000 take-home
LineAmountShare
RentRs 35,00029%
Groceries and milkRs 12,00010%
Electricity, gas and waterRs 7,0006%
Transport and fuelRs 6,0005%
Needs subtotalRs 60,00050%
School fees and tuitionRs 15,00012.5%
Eating out, clothes and personalRs 11,0009%
Eid, weddings and gifts fundRs 10,0008.5%
Wants and family subtotalRs 36,00030%
CommitteeRs 15,00012.5%
Emergency fundRs 9,0007.5%
Savings subtotalRs 24,00020%

In this example school fees sit in the second group because the family chose to keep bills and rent tight. Many families treat education as a need and trim wants instead. Either works, as long as the total balances. For a city-level view, see our cost of living in Karachi guide.

How do you handle rising electricity bills in your budget?

Plan for your highest bill, not your average one. Look at last year's bills, find the peak summer month and set aside the difference between that peak and your usual bill during the cooler months. Electricity tariffs in Pakistan are slab-based, so staying under a slab threshold can change the whole bill.

Simple habits help: set air conditioners to a moderate temperature, run heavy appliances outside peak hours and check each bill for the units used, taxes and any adjustments. Our guide to fixed vs variable expenses explains how to budget for costs that move month to month.

Saving in Pakistan: committee, emergency fund and goals

A committee is a trusted, disciplined way to save a lump sum, and it fits neatly into the planner's 20% savings share. It does not earn a return, though, and your payout date depends on the draw. Keep an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in a bank account alongside it.

Zakat, 2.5% of eligible wealth held for a lunar year, is easier to pay when you set aside a small amount each month rather than finding it all at once.

  1. Pay your committee and emergency fund on salary day, before other spending.
  2. Keep a separate fund for Eid, weddings and school admissions.
  3. Write down every cash expense the same day. Cash is where most budgets leak.
  4. Review the budget each month and change one category at a time.

FAQ

Monthly Budget Planner Pakistan: frequently asked questions

What is a good monthly budget for a family in Pakistan?

It depends on your city, rent and number of children. A good family budget keeps rent under about 30% of take-home, covers needs within about half of income and saves around 20%, including any committee. Enter your own numbers in the planner to see the split.

Does a committee count as savings?

Yes. A committee is forced saving, so the planner counts it in the 20% savings share. Keep an emergency fund as well, because you cannot always choose when your committee pays out.

How much should I set aside for electricity in summer?

Check your highest bill from last summer and plan for at least that amount. Save the difference between that peak and your normal bill during the cooler months so summer bills do not break the budget.

How do I budget for Eid and weddings?

Estimate what you spent last year on clothes, gifts, travel and events, divide by 12 and set that amount aside each month. The occasion then comes out of savings rather than a loan.

Can EMOH Pay connect to Pakistani banks?

No. Automatic bank sync is only available for Canadian banks. In Pakistan you log transactions manually or from receipts, and the app tracks budgets, savings goals and reports in rupees.
