Can I connect my BMO account to a budgeting app?
Yes. BMO Bank of Montreal accounts can be connected to a budgeting app such as EMOH Pay through Plaid, a secure data connection service. The connection is read-only, so the app can import and categorize transactions but cannot move money. EMOH Pay includes automatic bank sync in EMOH Pro at $4.99 a month, and manual tracking is free.
Yes. A BMO budgeting app connection links your BMO Bank of Montreal accounts to the app through Plaid. You sign in once through a secure window, pick the accounts to share, and your transactions start importing automatically.
Access is read-only. The app sees balances and transactions so it can categorize spending, but it cannot send money, pay bills or change your BMO accounts. You can disconnect whenever you want.
EMOH Pay is an independent Canadian app and is not affiliated with BMO. It connects to BMO the same way as to other Canadian banks, as our budgeting app with bank sync page explains.
How to connect BMO to a budget app
- Download EMOH Pay free on iPhone or Android, or sign up on the web at emohpay.com. Upgrade to EMOH Pro to enable bank sync.
- In Settings, open Linked Accounts and choose Connect Bank.
- Search for BMO Bank of Montreal.
- Sign in with your BMO online banking details in the secure Plaid window, or on BMO's own page if you are redirected, and complete any verification step.
- Select the chequing, savings and credit card accounts you want in your budget.
- Check the first batch of imported transactions and correct any categories.
Account-type coverage can vary, so check in the app which of your BMO accounts are available. For troubleshooting and disconnecting, see how to connect your bank.
Free plan vs EMOH Pro for BMO customers
You do not need bank sync to budget well. Many people start on the free plan, log spending by hand for a month and only then decide whether automatic imports are worth it.

Your first month after connecting BMO
Bank sync saves typing, but a budget still needs a few decisions from you. This routine gets a BMO-connected budget working in about four weeks.
- Week 1: clean up categories. Review imported BMO transactions daily and fix anything miscategorized, such as a pharmacy purchase filed as groceries.
- Week 2: mark recurring bills. Flag rent, phone, insurance and subscriptions so EMOH Pay can remind you before each one is due.
- Week 3: set category limits. Use two weeks of real spending to set realistic budgets for groceries, dining, transport and shopping.
- Week 4: add a goal. Create a savings goal, such as an emergency fund, and decide how much to move into savings each payday.

BMO expense tracker for students and families
Students and young adults
Many students open their first account with a big bank such as BMO. Connecting it to a budgeting app shows how fast a term's money is going and whether it will last until the next loan or pay deposit. Our student budget guide for Canada has sample budgets and tips.
Couples and families
If one partner banks with BMO and the other elsewhere, a budgeting app brings both into one household view. EMOH Pay's family sharing gives each person their own login on the same live budget. See our family budgeting app for Canada page.
Accounts outside Canada
BMO also operates in the United States. Automatic bank sync in EMOH Pay is confirmed only for Canadian banks, so add any US or overseas accounts manually. EMOH Pay converts 148 currencies automatically in your totals.
Is it safe to link BMO to a budgeting app?
Yes, when the connection is read-only and credentials are handled by a connection service. You sign in with Plaid or on BMO's page, and EMOH Pay never stores your password. Your data is encrypted with AES-256, never sold and handled under PIPEDA, Canada's private-sector privacy law.
You stay in control: share only the accounts you want, and disconnect in Linked Accounts at any time. Read more on our security page. If you also bank with CIBC, see the CIBC budgeting app guide.
