Quick answer

How do I budget in USD and PKR?

To budget in USD and PKR, pay your US rent, car and insurance in dollars first, then set a fixed monthly dollar amount for family in Pakistan. Convert it to rupees after the fee and exchange margin, agree the rupee figure with family, fund transfers from a bank account rather than cash, and keep a dollar buffer for rate moves.

Earn and spend in dollars, and put the USD to PKR transfer into your budget as a fixed bill. Families in Pakistan plan around a rupee amount, so agree that figure first, then work out the dollars needed at a realistic rate with a small cushion.

The calculator above does the arithmetic. Amount in USD is what you want to send. Transfer fee (%) is the provider's charge; divide a flat fee by the amount to express it as a percentage. Share of your USD income to send home and monthly income in USD are optional and show your monthly transfer in both currencies.

The EMOH Pay features page explains multi-currency tracking, and our currency converter covers every other pair. If you also send from the Gulf, see the AED to PKR converter.

USD to PKR today: interbank, open market and your provider's rate

The rupee is quoted mainly against the US dollar, which makes USD to PKR the reference rate for most other rupee pairs. In Pakistan you will see an interbank rate, used between banks and published by the State Bank of Pakistan, and an open-market rate offered by exchange companies. The two can differ, especially in volatile periods.

Transfer providers set their own rate, usually a margin below the mid-market figure you see in search results, and may add a fee. The rate in this tool is an indicative 2026 figure for planning, so check a live USD to PKR rate and your provider's quote before you send.

What US$500 becomes in rupees after costs

The table uses an illustrative mid-market rate of 280 rupees per dollar and three hypothetical providers, including one funded with cash to show the effect of the 2026 US excise tax. It is an example, not a quote.

Illustrative only: sending US$500 at a mid-market rate of 280 PKR per USD
ScenarioFee and taxExchange marginRupees received
Mid-market, no costs$00%Rs 140,000
Bank-funded, low margin$3 fee0.3%Rs 138,743
Bank-funded "zero fee" offer$01.2%Rs 138,320
Cash-funded at an agent$10 fee plus $5 excise tax2.5%Rs 132,405

The gap between the best and worst option is about Rs 6,300 on one transfer, or roughly Rs 76,000 over a year of monthly transfers. Read remittance fees explained for a step-by-step comparison method.

Rules for sending money from the US to Pakistan

  • Know what you will receive. US consumer protection rules overseen by the CFPB require remittance providers to disclose the exchange rate, fees and amount received, and generally let you cancel within 30 minutes of paying for a full refund.
  • Fund transfers from a bank account or card. From 1 January 2026, a 1% federal excise tax applies to remittances paid for with cash, money orders or similar physical instruments. Bank-funded and US card-funded transfers are generally exempt. Confirm details with the IRS.
  • Use formal channels. Informal hundi or hawala transfers are unregulated and offer no protection. The State Bank of Pakistan's Pakistan Remittance Initiative promotes sending through banks and licensed providers.
  • Consider a Roshan Digital Account. Non-resident Pakistanis can open one online with participating Pakistani banks, which can help if you manage savings, bills or property in Pakistan from the US.

Tips for a steady USD to PKR plan

  1. Send on a fixed day after payday, before discretionary spending.
  2. Agree a rupee target and review the dollar amount quarterly, not with every rate move.
  3. Compare rupees delivered across two or three licensed providers for your usual amount.
  4. Plan for Ramadan, Eid, weddings and school fees months ahead so you are not forced to send at a bad moment.
  5. Record each transfer in EMOH Pay. It converts across 148 currencies automatically, so the dollars you sent and the rupees your family received appear together.
