What is the TFSA limit for 2026?
The TFSA limit for 2026 is $7,000, the same as in 2024 and 2025, as confirmed by the Canada Revenue Agency. It was added to everyone's contribution room on 1 January 2026. Someone who has been 18 or older and a Canadian resident since 2009, and has never contributed, has $109,000 of total room in 2026.
TFSA limit 2026 and every year since 2009
The TFSA limit 2026 is $7,000. The annual dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, which is why it stays flat for a few years and then steps up. The one outlier is 2015, when the limit was briefly set at $10,000 before returning to indexed amounts.
Add up every year from 2009 to 2026 and the total is $109,000. That is the most anyone can have contributed, before counting withdrawals added back.
How much TFSA room do I have in 2026?
Your TFSA room in 2026 is your unused room from previous years, plus any withdrawals you made in 2025, plus the $7,000 limit for 2026. Room starts building from the year you turn 18 and become a resident with a Social Insurance Number, whether or not you open an account.
| Year you turned 18 (resident) | Total room in 2026 |
|---|---|
| 2009 or earlier | $109,000 |
| 2015 | $78,000 |
| 2020 | $45,500 |
| 2024 | $21,000 |
| 2026 | $7,000 |
Years spent as a non-resident do not add room, so newcomers start counting from the year they became residents. Our TFSA contribution room calculator works out your figure from your birth year, residency and past contributions.
How to check your TFSA contribution limit
The CRA itself warns that the figure in My Account may be out of date. In its own example, a person who relied on an unprocessed balance over-contributed by $4,000.
- Sign in to CRA My Account and open the TFSA section. It shows your room as of 1 January.
- Check the date of the last update. The CRA processes the previous year's records by about April, so contributions made in 2025 may not appear until then.
- Subtract any contributions you have made so far in 2026, across every TFSA you hold.
- Compare the result with your own records, such as statements from each bank or brokerage. Your own records are the safer guide early in the year.
What happens if you go over the TFSA limit
If you contribute more than your available room, the CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount in that month, for as long as it stays in the account. A $2,000 excess left for six months costs about $120.
The fix is to withdraw the excess as soon as you notice. The tax stops from the following month. Remember that re-contributing money you withdrew earlier in the same year counts as a new contribution, which is how many people end up over the limit without realizing it.
- Withdrawals come back next year. Take out $5,000 in 2026 and that $5,000 is added to your room on 1 January 2027, not straight away.
- Transfers are different. A direct transfer between two of your TFSAs does not use room. A withdrawal followed by a deposit does.
- Growth does not use room. Investment gains inside the account never count against your limit.
TFSA contribution limit versus RRSP and FHSA
The TFSA limit is a flat dollar amount for everyone. The RRSP limit depends on income: 18% of the previous year's earned income, up to $33,810 for 2026. The FHSA allows $8,000 a year toward a first home, with a $40,000 lifetime cap. You can use all three at once.
A TFSA suits flexible savings because withdrawals are tax-free and the room returns. An RRSP gives a deduction now and taxes withdrawals later. For the basics, read what is a TFSA, and to weigh the two for your income, try the TFSA vs RRSP calculator.
Planning your 2026 TFSA contributions
Spreading $7,000 across the year works out to about $583 a month or $269 every two weeks. Automating the transfer on payday makes it happen before the money is spent.
EMOH Pay lets you set a TFSA savings goal and shows progress each month alongside your budget, so you can see how much room is left to fill. Net worth tracking in EMOH Pay then shows the account growing over time. The compound interest calculator is a useful way to see what steady contributions could grow into.

Is the TFSA limit going up in 2026?
No. The 2026 limit is $7,000, unchanged from 2024 and 2025. The limit rises in $500 steps once inflation indexing pushes it past the rounding point.
What is the total TFSA limit in 2026?
The cumulative limit is $109,000 for someone who was 18 or older and a Canadian resident in 2009 and has lived in Canada since. Your own room may be higher if you made withdrawals, or lower if you became eligible later.
Does unused TFSA room carry forward?
Yes. Unused room carries forward indefinitely, so you never lose it. You can catch up in a later year without any penalty.
When is the 2027 TFSA limit announced?
The CRA usually announces the next year's limit in November, after the inflation figures used for indexing are available. Check the CRA TFSA page for the official amount.
Do I need to be 18 to contribute to a TFSA?
Yes. You must be 18 or older with a valid Social Insurance Number. In provinces where the age of majority is 19, you can open an account at 19, but room still accrues from 18.
