How the Quebec salary calculator works

The Quebec salary calculator needs your annual gross salary, the pay in your contract before deductions. You can add RRSP contributions this year to see how they lower both your federal and Quebec tax. Then choose to show take-home pay per month, semi-monthly period, two weeks, week or year.

Quebec works differently from the rest of Canada, and the calculator reflects that. It applies the federal brackets and then reduces federal tax by the 16.5% Quebec abatement. It applies Quebec's own brackets and basic personal amount. It deducts Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) contributions instead of CPP, a reduced Employment Insurance premium, and Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) premiums.

The result is an estimate for a Quebec resident employee claiming only the basic personal amounts. Quebec has several extra credits and deductions, such as the deduction for workers, which can lower your real tax. For the other provinces, use the Canadian income tax calculator.

Quebec income tax brackets

Quebec collects its own provincial income tax through Revenu Québec, on a separate return from your federal one. It has four brackets, and its rates start much higher than other provinces' lowest rates.

Federal tax sits on top, starting at 14% on the first $58,523 in 2026, but Quebec residents pay 16.5% less of it because of the abatement. That makes the combined marginal rate on a $75,000 salary about 36%.

Why is take-home pay lower in Quebec?

Take-home pay is lower in Quebec mainly because provincial income tax starts at 14%, compared with roughly 5% to 11% in most other provinces. QPP contributions are also slightly higher than CPP. The federal abatement and a lower EI rate offset part of the difference, but not all of it.

The federal abatement

Quebec runs some programs that Ottawa funds elsewhere, so Quebec residents get a refundable abatement of 16.5% of basic federal tax. On a $75,000 salary it cuts federal tax by roughly $1,400.

QPP instead of CPP

The Quebec Pension Plan works like the CPP, but the base employee rate was 6.4% in 2025 versus 5.95% for CPP. Both plans add a second 4% tier on earnings between the first and second ceilings.

Lower EI, plus QPIP

Because Quebec pays its own parental benefits, employees pay a reduced EI rate, 1.30% in 2026 against 1.63% elsewhere, and pay QPIP premiums instead. QPIP was 0.494% of insurable earnings in 2025.

What you get back

Quebec's higher deductions fund programs such as low-cost child care and QPIP parental benefits. The trade-off shows up in family budgets, not just on the pay stub.

Worked example: $75,000 salary in Montreal

A contribution to an RRSP reduces both federal and Quebec tax. At a 36% marginal rate, $5,000 in an RRSP saves roughly $1,800. Model yours with the RRSP calculator.

Remember that prices in Quebec carry 9.975% QST on top of 5% GST. The QST calculator adds both, and our guide to budgeting in Montreal shows how a net income like this is typically split.

  1. Federal income tax after credits and the 16.5% abatement: about $7,100.
  2. Quebec income tax after the Quebec basic personal amount and credits: about $8,120.
  3. QPP contributions, including the second tier above the first ceiling: about $4,570.
  4. EI premiums at the reduced Quebec rate: about $900.
  5. QPIP premiums: about $370.
  6. Take-home pay: about $53,950 a year, $4,495 a month or $2,075 every two weeks.

Estimates only. Your employer uses federal and Revenu Québec payroll tables and your TD1 and TP-1015.3 forms, so your pay stub can differ slightly.

FAQ

Quebec Salary Calculator: frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on $60,000 in Quebec?

On $60,000 in 2026 you pay roughly $4,660 in federal tax after the abatement and $5,420 in Quebec tax, plus about $3,620 in QPP, $780 in EI and $300 in QPIP. That leaves about $45,200 a year.

Why do Quebec residents file two tax returns?

Quebec administers its own provincial income tax. Residents file a federal return with the CRA and a separate TP-1 return with Revenu Québec, instead of a single combined return.

What is the Quebec federal abatement?

It is a 16.5% reduction of basic federal tax for Quebec residents. It reflects programs Quebec funds itself, and it is claimed on the federal return.

Is QPIP the same as EI?

No. QPIP pays maternity, paternity, parental and adoption benefits in Quebec. Because of it, Quebec employees pay a lower EI premium, while EI still covers regular and sickness benefits.

Why is my Quebec pay stub different from the calculator?

Payroll uses the official withholding tables and your federal and Quebec source-deduction forms, plus any pension, union dues or group insurance. The calculator assumes only the basic personal amounts.
