Quick answer

How do I calculate GST and QST?

To calculate GST and QST in Quebec, multiply the price before tax by 5% for GST and by 9.975% for QST, then add both to the price. The combined rate is 14.975%, so $100 becomes $114.98. Each tax is charged on the pre-tax price, not on the other. To remove both, divide the total by 1.14975.

How to use the QST calculator

This QST calculator adds Quebec sales tax to any amount. Enter the price before tax and it shows the 5% federal GST, the 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax and the total you pay. It suits shoppers checking a receipt as well as freelancers and small businesses preparing a quote.

For the other provinces, including HST provinces and those with a separate PST, use our GST/HST calculator. This page covers Quebec only, where two taxes are charged side by side.

  1. Amount before tax. Type the price without tax, such as $100.
  2. Read the GST line. The calculator multiplies the amount by 0.05.
  3. Read the QST line. It multiplies the same amount by 0.09975.
  4. Read the total. Price plus both taxes, which equals the amount multiplied by 1.14975.

TPS TVQ calculator: GST and QST at common amounts

In French, GST is the TPS (taxe sur les produits et services) and QST is the TVQ (taxe de vente du Québec), so a TPS TVQ calculator and a GST QST calculator do the same job. The table shows both taxes on everyday amounts, rounded to the cent.

GST and QST on common pre-tax amounts in Quebec
Price before taxGST (5%)QST (9.975%)Total
$10.00$0.50$1.00$11.50
$25.00$1.25$2.49$28.74
$50.00$2.50$4.99$57.49
$100.00$5.00$9.98$114.98
$500.00$25.00$49.88$574.88
$1,000.00$50.00$99.75$1,149.75

Retailers round each tax separately, so a receipt can differ from a single 14.975% calculation by a cent.

How do I remove GST and QST from a total?

To remove GST and QST from a total, divide the tax-included amount by 1.14975 to get the price before tax. Then multiply that price by 0.05 for the GST portion and by 0.09975 for the QST portion. This is how you find the tax on a receipt that shows only a total.

  1. Take the total, for example $57.49.
  2. Divide by 1.14975 to get the pre-tax price: about $50.00.
  3. Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.05 for GST: $2.50.
  4. Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.09975 for QST: about $4.99.

Businesses registered for GST and QST need these amounts to claim input tax credits and input tax refunds on their purchases. Keeping receipts organized all year saves hours at filing time.

Why QST is not charged on GST any more

Before 2013, Quebec charged QST on the price plus GST, a tax on a tax. Since 1 January 2013, QST is calculated on the price alone and the rate was set at 9.975%. That change is why the combined rate is 14.975% rather than a compounded figure.

Quebec's system works much like the harmonized sales tax in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, except that Quebec keeps its own tax and administers it itself. Our explainer on GST, HST and PST compares every province's approach.

What is taxable, zero-rated or exempt in Quebec?

Most goods and services in Quebec carry both GST and QST. Some are zero-rated, meaning taxed at 0%, and some are exempt. In general, the two taxes follow similar rules, but check Revenu Québec for specific items.

  • Usually taxable: restaurant meals, clothing, electronics, furniture, vehicles, most services and snack foods.
  • Usually zero-rated: basic groceries, prescription drugs and many medical devices.
  • Usually exempt: long-term residential rent, most health care and education services, child care and many financial services.

Groceries are a common source of confusion. Staples like milk, bread and vegetables are zero-rated, while chips, candy and soft drinks are taxable.

GST and QST for Quebec businesses and freelancers

Most businesses in Quebec register for both taxes with Revenu Québec, which administers GST as well as QST for most Quebec businesses. Registration becomes mandatory once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Our guide to the small supplier threshold explains the test.

Once registered, you charge both taxes, show both registration numbers on invoices and file returns reporting tax collected minus tax paid on business purchases. EMOH Pay's GST/HST expense tracker records the tax portion of each expense so it is ready when you file. EMOH Pay is free to start on iPhone, Android and the web.
