How does the 365-Day Savings Challenge work?
The 365 day savings challenge works by saving one cent more each day for a full year: 1¢ on day 1, 2¢ on day 2, up to $3.65 on day 365. The deposits add up to $667.95. A simpler version saves a flat $1 a day for $365, and a 5¢ step version saves $3,339.75.
How the 365 day savings challenge works
The 365 day savings challenge turns saving into a daily habit with amounts so small they are easy to start. On day 1 you save one cent. Each day after, you save one cent more. By day 100 you are saving $1 a day, and on day 365 you save $3.65.
Because the amounts rise slowly, the challenge is gentle for months. It only asks for real money in the last quarter of the year, by which point the habit is usually set.
The tracker above calculates any version. Enter 1 for the classic cent-a-day challenge, 5 for a 5¢ step or 10 for a 10¢ step. It shows your total, the final day's deposit and your average per day.
- Choose a start date. 1 January is common, but any date works.
- Pick where the money goes, ideally a separate savings account.
- Each day, transfer that day's amount, or batch a week at a time.
- Mark the day on a printed chart or log it in an app.
- Catch up on missed days at the end of each week.
365 day savings challenge chart
Here is how the classic version builds. Almost half the total arrives in the final 100 days, so plan for the last stretch of the year.
| Day | Deposit that day | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Day 30 | $0.30 | $4.65 |
| Day 90 | $0.90 | $40.95 |
| Day 180 | $1.80 | $162.90 |
| Day 270 | $2.70 | $365.85 |
| Day 365 | $3.65 | $667.95 |
If you batch deposits weekly, week 1 costs 28¢ and week 52 costs about $25. That weekly view is often easier to plan around than daily transfers.
Which version of the 365-day challenge should you try?
The classic version suits almost any budget. If you want a bigger result, increase the step. If you want something simpler, save the same amount every day. Pick the one whose biggest day you can comfortably cover.
| Version | Day 1 | Day 365 | Year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1¢ step (classic) | $0.01 | $3.65 | $667.95 |
| 5¢ step | $0.05 | $18.25 | $3,339.75 |
| 10¢ step | $0.10 | $36.50 | $6,679.50 |
| Flat $1 a day | $1 | $1 | $365 |
| Flat $2 a day | $2 | $2 | $730 |
| Reverse 1¢ step | $3.65 | $0.01 | $667.95 |
The reverse version puts the largest deposits in January and the smallest in December, which helps if your holiday spending runs high. Another option is to pick any unused number from 1 to 365 each day and save that many cents. The total is the same, but you choose small numbers on tight days.
Doing the challenge without pennies in Canada
Canada stopped distributing the penny in 2013, and cash payments are rounded to the nearest five cents. That makes a coin-jar version of the cent-a-day challenge awkward. The easiest fix is to save digitally, where exact cents are no problem.
If you prefer cash, round each week's total to the nearest dollar and drop it in the jar. The year still comes out close to $667.95.
- Digital daily: transfer the exact amount each day in your banking app.
- Digital weekly: add up the week, for example $3.22 in week 7, and transfer it on Sunday.
- Cash weekly: round each week to the nearest dollar and keep a tally of the exact figure.
365 day savings challenge printable layout
A printable chart is a grid of 365 boxes, usually laid out as 12 monthly blocks. Each box shows its amount, from 1¢ to $3.65. Colour in a box each time you save. Laying it out by month lets you see your monthly total at a glance.
You can also skip the paper. Set a savings goal of $667.95 in EMOH Pay and log deposits as you go. The goal sits beside your budgets, bills and net worth, on iPhone, Android and the web, so you see progress every time you check your spending.
