How much does a wedding cost in Canada?
The average wedding cost in Canada varies widely, from about $10,000 for a small ceremony and dinner to $40,000 or more for a traditional reception with 100 or more guests. Guest count and location drive most of the difference, because venue and catering usually take close to half of the budget. No official statistic exists.
What is the average wedding cost in Canada?
The average wedding cost in Canada is hard to pin down because no government agency tracks it. Figures you see online come from wedding industry surveys, which vary by year and sample. A realistic range for most couples is about $10,000 to $40,000, with large weddings in Toronto or Vancouver well above that.
Rather than chasing an average, start from your guest list and your city. A 40-guest dinner in Winnipeg and a 150-guest Saturday reception in downtown Toronto are different projects with different budgets.
If you are building the plan step by step, our 12-step wedding budget planner walks through the process. This page focuses on the numbers.
Wedding budget breakdown by category
A typical wedding budget breakdown puts venue and catering first, followed by photography, attire and decor. The shares below are a planning guide, not a statistic. Use them to divide your total budget before you start booking vendors.
| Category | Typical share | On a $25,000 budget |
|---|---|---|
| Venue, catering and bar | 40% to 50% | $10,000 to $12,500 |
| Photography and video | 10% to 12% | $2,500 to $3,000 |
| Attire, hair and makeup | 8% to 10% | $2,000 to $2,500 |
| Flowers and decor | 8% to 10% | $2,000 to $2,500 |
| Music or DJ | 5% to 8% | $1,250 to $2,000 |
| Rings | 3% to 5% | $750 to $1,250 |
| Stationery, favours, officiant, licence | 3% to 5% | $750 to $1,250 |
| Transportation | 2% to 3% | $500 to $750 |
| Buffer for surprises | 5% to 10% | $1,250 to $2,500 |
Remember that most vendor quotes exclude GST or HST, and many catering quotes add a service charge on top. Ask for all-in totals. Our GST/HST calculator shows what tax adds in your province.
Sample wedding budgets: small, mid-size and large
These illustrative budgets show how guest count changes the total. They assume vendor prices in a mid-size Canadian city in 2026. Large cities and peak summer Saturdays cost more.
| Item | Small (30 guests) | Mid-size (100 guests) | Large (175 guests) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue, food and drinks | $3,500 | $13,000 | $26,000 |
| Photography | $1,500 | $3,500 | $5,000 |
| Attire and beauty | $1,200 | $2,500 | $4,000 |
| Flowers and decor | $600 | $2,500 | $5,000 |
| Music | $300 | $1,500 | $2,500 |
| Rings | $1,000 | $1,500 | $2,500 |
| Everything else | $900 | $2,500 | $4,000 |
| Total | about $9,000 | about $27,000 | about $49,000 |
How to lower the cost of a wedding
The most effective way to cut wedding costs is to reduce the guest list, because almost every line scales with headcount: food, drinks, chairs, tables, invitations and venue size. Every ten guests removed can save a meaningful amount before you touch anything else.
- Set the total first, then the guest list. Decide what you can afford and divide by a realistic cost per guest.
- Choose an off-peak date. Friday, Sunday and off-season weddings often get lower venue minimums.
- Combine ceremony and reception. One venue saves on transport, decor and rental fees.
- Limit the bar. A beer and wine bar, or a set number of drink tickets, costs less than an open bar.
- Prioritize three things. Pick the three items that matter most and keep everything else simple.
How couples pay for a wedding without debt
Paying for a wedding with savings rather than credit keeps your first years together free of high-interest debt. Work backward from the date: divide the total by the months left and set up an automatic transfer on payday.
A shared savings goal helps both partners see progress. EMOH Pay lets couples share one budget with separate logins, set a wedding savings goal and track every deposit and vendor payment in one place. You can attach receipts to each payment so nothing gets lost. Our budgeting app for couples page explains how shared budgets work, and our savings goal calculator shows how much to set aside each month.
If family members are contributing, agree on amounts and timing early, and record them as income so your plan reflects real money rather than promises. After the wedding, our guide to splitting finances as a couple helps you set up money as a household.

How much should a wedding cost per guest in Canada?
Many couples budget roughly $150 to $300 per guest for the whole day, including food, drinks and a share of venue and decor. Large cities and full-service venues sit at the upper end or above.
Who traditionally pays for a wedding in Canada?
Traditions vary by culture and family. Today many Canadian couples pay for most of the wedding themselves, often with help from one or both families. What matters is agreeing early on who pays for what.
Is a $10,000 wedding realistic in Canada?
Yes, with a small guest list. A ceremony and dinner for 30 to 40 people at a restaurant or family home, with a photographer for a few hours, can fit within $10,000 in most cities.
How long does it take to save for a wedding?
Divide your budget by what you can save each month. Saving $1,000 a month reaches $18,000 in 18 months. Automating the transfer on payday makes the target far more likely to happen.
Do I pay tax on wedding vendors?
Most wedding goods and services carry GST or HST, and provincial sales tax where it applies. Check whether each quote includes tax and service charges before you compare vendors.
