How much is the Canada Disability Benefit and who qualifies?
The Canada Disability Benefit pays up to $204.20 a month from July 2026 to June 2027, up from $200 in the first year. You qualify if you are 18 to 64, hold an approved Disability Tax Credit certificate, are a Canadian resident for tax purposes and you and any spouse have filed your 2025 tax returns.
What is the Canada Disability Benefit?
The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a monthly, tax-free federal payment for low-income people with disabilities aged 18 to 64. It is run by Employment and Social Development Canada and paid by Service Canada. The first month of eligibility was June 2025 and the first payments went out in July 2025.
It is separate from the CPP disability benefit, which depends on your work history and CPP contributions, and from provincial disability assistance. The CDB is income-tested on your adjusted family net income, so the amount you get depends on your tax return from the year before. The benefit is adjusted for inflation each year and, according to Canada.ca, the payment will not go down if the cost of living falls.
How much is the Canada Disability Benefit?
The maximum is $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027, or about $2,450 a year. You get the full amount if your adjusted family net income, after the working income exemption, is at or below the threshold. Above it, the benefit shrinks gradually. The benefit year runs from July to June and uses the previous year's tax return.
| Rule | July 2025 to June 2026 | July 2026 to June 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum monthly benefit | $200 | $204.20 |
| Income based on | 2024 tax return | 2025 tax return |
| Working income exempt, single | Up to $10,000 | Up to $10,210 |
| Working income exempt, couple | Up to $14,000 combined | Up to $14,294 combined |
| Full benefit if income is at or below, single | $23,000 | $23,000 (as listed on Canada.ca) |
| Full benefit if income is at or below, couple | $32,500 | $32,500 (as listed on Canada.ca) |
Above the threshold, a single person or someone whose spouse is not eligible loses 20 cents for every dollar of extra income. When both spouses are eligible, each person's benefit drops by 10 cents per dollar instead. If your total for the July to June year works out to $240 or less, Service Canada pays it as one lump sum rather than monthly.

Worked example: how income reduces the benefit
Canada.ca uses an example of a single person with $35,000 of employment income in the July 2025 to June 2026 year. The arithmetic below follows that example step by step, so you can repeat it with your own numbers.
- Start with adjusted family net income: $35,000, all from work.
- Subtract the working income exemption: $35,000 minus $10,000 leaves $25,000.
- Compare with the single threshold: $25,000 minus $23,000 is $2,000 over.
- Apply the 20% reduction: $2,000 times 0.20 is $400 a year.
- Spread it over 12 months: $400 divided by 12 is about $33.33 a month.
- Subtract from the maximum: $200 minus $33.33 leaves $166.67 a month.
For July 2026 onward, use the $204.20 maximum and the $10,210 exemption in the same steps. Because the exemption only applies to working income, someone with the same total income from other sources would see a bigger reduction. Who is eligible for the Canada Disability Benefit?
You are eligible if you are 18 to 64, already approved for the Disability Tax Credit, a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, and you and any spouse or common-law partner have filed your 2025 federal tax returns. You also need a qualifying immigration status, such as citizen, permanent resident or protected person.
- Age. You can apply up to six months before turning 18, but payments start only after your 18th birthday. People who are 65 or older may still get back payments up to the month they turned 65.
- Disability Tax Credit. An approved DTC certificate is required. If you do not have one, apply to the CRA first.
- Tax returns. Both you and your spouse must file every year by April 30 to keep receiving payments. Our guide to the Canadian tax filing deadline covers the dates.
- Status. Citizens, permanent residents, people registered or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act, protected persons, and temporary residents who have lived in Canada throughout the previous 18 months.
- Incarceration. People serving a federal sentence of two years or more are not eligible, except for the first and last month.
When are Canada Disability Benefit payment dates in 2026?
Canada Disability Benefit payments are sent on the third Thursday of each month. Your first payment arrives on the third Thursday of the month after your application is approved and includes any back payments owed, up to 24 months but no earlier than June 2025. Direct deposit is the fastest way to get paid.

|---|---|
| January | January 15 |
| February | February 19 |
| March | March 19 |
| April | April 16 |
| May | May 21 |

Service Canada also announced a one-time $150 supplement to help offset the cost of getting the Disability Tax Credit. It was paid automatically on September 17, 2026 to people who received a CDB payment between July 2025 and June 2026, with a second round planned for winter 2027. Nobody needs to apply for it. If you also receive CPP disability, those deposits follow a different schedule, listed on our CPP payment dates page.
Dates match the Canada.ca benefits payment calendar as checked October 2026.
How do you apply for the Canada Disability Benefit?
Apply online through Canada.ca for the quickest result, or by phone with Service Canada, in person at a Service Canada office, or with a paper form. Payments begin the month after approval, so applying soon after your Disability Tax Credit is approved avoids waiting longer than needed.
- Confirm your Disability Tax Credit is approved and your latest tax return is filed.
- Gather your Social Insurance Number, proof of legal status in Canada and, if Service Canada sent you a letter, the six-digit application code on it.
- Add your direct deposit details so payments arrive without delay.
- Submit online, by phone, in person, or by mailing the paper form to the CDB processing centre.
- Plan the money in your monthly budget once the approval letter arrives.
Making the benefit go further
A payment of around $200 a month matters most when it is planned for. Many people assign it to one fixed cost, such as a phone bill, transit pass or medication co-payments, so it is not absorbed into general spending. Others use part of it to build a small emergency fund.
EMOH Pay is free to start on iPhone, Android and the web, and can track benefit deposits as income alongside your bills and budgets. For a wider view of federal and provincial supports, see our guide to budgeting in Canada. People with low incomes may also qualify for the Canada Dental Care Plan.

Is the Canada Disability Benefit taxable?
No. Canada.ca says the benefit is not taxable, you do not report it as income and no tax slip is issued. You must still file a tax return every year to stay eligible.
Do I need the Disability Tax Credit to get the Canada Disability Benefit?
Yes. An approved Disability Tax Credit certificate is a core requirement. If you are not yet approved, apply for the DTC with the CRA first, then apply for the CDB.
Can I get back payments?
Yes. If you are eligible, Service Canada can pay up to 24 months of back payments from when your application is received, but not for any month before June 2025. Back pay is included in your first payment.
Does my spouse's income affect the benefit?
Yes. The benefit uses adjusted family net income, so a spouse or common-law partner's income counts. Couples get a higher threshold and a combined working income exemption. If both spouses are eligible, each benefit falls by 10 cents per dollar over the threshold.
Does the Canada Disability Benefit go up each year?
It is adjusted for inflation each July. The maximum rose from $200 a month in the first year to $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027.
