How do I budget in CAD and USD?

To budget in CAD and USD, keep your main budget in Canadian dollars and convert every US-dollar cost back to CAD, including card fees and exchange margins. Set a CAD limit for trips, US subscriptions or a snowbird season, convert in larger planned amounts rather than purchase by purchase, and add a buffer because the rate moves daily.

Keep one budget, in Canadian dollars, and treat US spending as a category inside it. Whether it is a week in Florida, a streaming service billed in US dollars or a whole winter in Arizona, convert the US cost into CAD with fees included, then set a CAD limit you can live with.

The calculator above converts CAD to USD at an indicative rate. Amount in CAD is what you plan to convert. Transfer fee (%) is the total cost of converting, such as a 2.5% card fee or a provider's margin. Share of your CAD income and monthly income in CAD are optional and work well for recurring costs, such as supporting a student in the US or paying a US mortgage.

This page focuses on budgeting across the border. For other currencies and a general overview, use our main currency converter, and see the EMOH Pay features page for how multi-currency tracking works.

CAD to USD today: why the rate you pay is lower

The CAD to USD rate shown in search results is the mid-market rate. Banks, card networks and exchange counters all add a margin, and many Canadian credit cards add a foreign transaction fee on top, commonly about 2.5%. Together they can make US prices several percent more expensive than the headline rate suggests.

The Bank of Canada publishes a daily reference rate for the US dollar. It is not a rate you can trade at, but it is the one the Canada Revenue Agency accepts for converting foreign income and expenses, and a useful yardstick for judging any quote you get.

Illustrative only: what $3,000 CAD buys at a mid-market rate of 0.72 USD per CAD
MethodCost of convertingUS dollars you get
Mid-market rate0%US$2,160
Low-margin online or brokerage conversionabout 0.5%US$2,149
Credit card with a 2.5% foreign feeabout 2.5%US$2,107
Branch or airport exchange with a wide marginabout 3%US$2,095

Across a $12,000 snowbird season, the difference between a 0.5% and a 3% conversion cost is roughly US$200, enough for a week of groceries or a few rounds of golf.

Cheaper ways to convert CAD to USD

  • No foreign transaction fee cards. Several Canadian credit cards waive the foreign fee. You still pay the network's rate, but avoid the extra charge.
  • US-dollar accounts at Canadian banks. Convert once when the rate suits you, then spend or pay US bills from the USD balance.
  • Online conversion services. Often cheaper than branch exchanges for moderate amounts.
  • Norbert's gambit for large sums. Investors sometimes buy a security listed in both currencies, move it to the US-dollar side of a brokerage account and sell it for US dollars. It can cut costs on large conversions but has timing risk and commissions.
  • Avoid dynamic currency conversion. When a US terminal offers to charge you in Canadian dollars, decline. The rate it uses is usually worse than your card's.

Snowbird budget: a winter in the US

Snowbirds carry two households at once. The US costs are in dollars, while property tax, insurance and some utilities at home keep billing in CAD. This example is illustrative for a retired couple wintering in the US.

Before a long stay, check your province's rules on time outside Canada, because health coverage depends on minimum residency. Canadians who spend long periods in the US may also need to consider US presence rules, and a cross-border tax adviser can confirm what applies. Our retirement budget app page covers planning on a fixed income.

Cross-border shopping, US subscriptions and US income

Cross-border shopping

When you return to Canada, the personal exemption is $200 CAD after 24 hours away and $800 CAD after 48 hours, per person, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. Goods above those limits can attract duties and GST or HST, which can wipe out the savings. Budget the conversion cost and any tax, not just the sticker price.

US-dollar subscriptions

Software, streaming and online services billed in US dollars change price in Canadian terms whenever the rate moves, and a card fee may apply on each charge. List them in one category so you can see their true monthly cost in CAD.

Earning in US dollars

Freelancers with US clients should convert income to CAD for tax using the Bank of Canada rate for the day received or the annual average, as the CRA allows. Our guide to self-employed taxes in Canada covers instalments and set-asides, and the freelancer budgeting app page shows how to track uneven income.

Tips for keeping cross-border spending on budget

  1. Set every US limit in CAD, the currency your income arrives in.
  2. Convert planned amounts in advance instead of paying the card fee on every purchase.
  3. Decline offers to be charged in Canadian dollars at US terminals.
  4. Keep a 3% to 5% buffer in your US budget for rate swings.
  5. Track US and Canadian spending together in EMOH Pay. It converts across 148 currencies automatically, and on EMOH Pro your Canadian bank accounts sync through Plaid, so both sides of the border appear in one budget.

FAQ

CAD to USD Converter + Budget Planner: frequently asked questions

Is the CAD to USD rate in this calculator live?

No. It uses an indicative 2026 rate for planning. Check the Bank of Canada's daily rate and your bank or card's actual rate before you convert.

What is the cheapest way to get US dollars in Canada?

For everyday spending, a card with no foreign transaction fee is simple. For larger amounts, a US-dollar account funded through a low-margin conversion or a brokerage is usually cheaper than a branch or airport counter.

Should I pay in CAD or USD at a US store?

Choose US dollars. Dynamic currency conversion, which offers to bill you in CAD, usually applies a worse rate than your card.

How do I report US income on my Canadian tax return?

Convert it to Canadian dollars using the Bank of Canada rate on the day you received it, or the annual average rate if you were paid throughout the year, as the CRA allows.

How much can I bring back duty-free from the US?

Up to $200 CAD per person after 24 hours away and $800 CAD after 48 hours, with limits on alcohol and tobacco. Check the CBSA site before you travel.
